CIVL UG Students Gain First-Hand Exposure to Greater Bay Area Civil Engineering Developments through Nansha Study Tour

Over 100 Year 1 undergraduate students majoring in Civil Engineering participated in a one-day student exchange tour to Nansha, Guangzhou, on 14 May 2026, gaining valuable first-hand exposure to the latest civil engineering developments and construction practices in the Greater Bay Area.

Led by Prof. Jiachuan Yang, Undergraduate Coordinator and Associate Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the tour formed part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to broaden students’ academic and professional horizons beyond the classroom. Through site visits and guided learning opportunities, students were able to better understand how major infrastructure, urban development, and construction technologies are being implemented in nearby cities within the Greater Bay Area.

During the tour, students visited the Greater Bay Area Sports Centre, the Nansha Tunnel Museum and a Nansha Resettlement Housing Project. These visits provided students with direct exposure to large-scale public facilities, housing development projects, and tunnel engineering infrastructure, allowing them to observe real-world civil engineering applications and project delivery in an active urban development context.

The exchange tour offered students an opportunity to connect their classroom learning with practical engineering examples. By comparing the civil engineering practices and urban development approaches observed in Nansha with their own study and daily life in Hong Kong, students developed a deeper appreciation of the rapid development taking place across the Greater Bay Area. They also gained insights into emerging construction technologies, infrastructure planning, and the role of civil engineers in supporting sustainable urban growth.

The Nansha study tour not only enriched students’ learning experience, but also strengthened their understanding of the dynamic development landscape beyond Hong Kong, enable them to develop a stronger awareness of regional development and future career opportunities in the Greater Bay Area. The Department looks forward to continuing to offer meaningful exchange and experiential learning opportunities to support students’ academic, professional, and personal development.
